Acai Risks & Interactions

Acai berries have been consumed by the Amazon people for centuries. Acai appears to be safe, in moderation, and there are no known risks or side effects.  However, there is always a potential risk for side effects and interactions with any medicine or supplement.

High doses of antioxidants may be harmful.

Antioxidant supplements were once thought to be harmless, but researchers are becoming aware of interactions and potential toxicity. According to one source, normal concentrations of vitamin C and beta-carotene found in the body are antioxidants, but in higher concentrations, they become pro-oxidants and potentially harmful.  Also, little is known about the long term consequences of large doses of antioxidants.

Cancer patients should not take vitamins, minerals or any dietary supplements without consulting their doctor.  Large doses of antioxidants may reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

We recommend that you consult your physician or healthcare professional before adding Acai to your regular diet, ESPECIALLY  if you have a medical condition or are taking other drugs, herbs or supplements.

Clearly much more long-term research with human clinical trials needs to be conducted before we will know all of the benefits and/or all of the risks associated with ingesting Acai.  In the meantime, do consult your doctor before beginning a regular Acai regimen.

What is a safe but effective Acai supplement dose?
Most sources recommend 1000 to 2000 mg per day. There are no set standards.  Follow the instructions on the label.  Better yet, consult your health care provider.
